STANFORD UNIVERSITY SAYS: "We use the TS (DMI) actuators geared at a very low ratio to produce small carefully-controlled movements of glass microelectrodes. The actuators are capable of very slow linear movements (~1 micrometer/second) so that under visual control with the microscope we can exactly place the tip of the electrode so that it is located adjacent to a neuron that we will study. The actuator are very stable and produce little drift."
